Grade 416 stainless steel has the highest machinability of the many grades of stainless steel, according to The A to Z of Materials' online database of metals. A metal's machinability is the ease with which it can be manipulated by machines through processes such as cutting, drilling and grinding. It's the addition of sulfur that gives it this quality. It's this quality that makes it an ideal material for uses such as valve parts, pump shafts, washing machine components, and bolts and nuts.
Corrosion ResistanceWhile all stainless steels are very resistant to corrosion, this is one grade of steel that is not as corrosion-resistant as others. The same sulfur that gives this metal its machinability also lowers the sulfur content, notes The A to Z of Materials website. This grade of stainless steel has a resistance to corrosion from dry atmosphere, fresh water and mild alkaloids and acids, but harsher elements such as salt water will harm it. For this reason, this metal is not suitable for marine applications, as many other grades of stainless steel are.
HardnessGrade 416 steel is a martensitic steel. These types of steels can be hardened by heat treatment, and are relatively cheap. The ability of 416 steel to be hardened by heat compromises some of the other properties commonly desired in steel products.
FormabilityWhile this type of steel is can be easily cut, drilled, and grinded down by machinery, it does not have a very good formability. Formability refers to the ability of a metal to be readily bent, shaped or stamped.
WeldabilityGrade 416 stainless steel can be welded, although this process may be more difficult to accomplish than with other grades, according to Specialty Steel Supply. When welded, it must be annealed to ensure sufficient ductility and corrosion resistance. Annealing is a type of heat treatment.
